Understanding Battery Energy Storage Systems

In 2030, McKinsey predicts a surge of 48 million EVs plugging into the US power grid. As utility providers gear up for the increased load, the need for robust solutions becomes paramount. Electricity usage in the US follows established patterns, peaking during summer and winter and dipping in spring and autumn. On-peak hours, generally 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. on weekdays, see higher rates due to increased demand. Off-peak hours, from 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. on weekdays and all day on weekends and holidays, offer lower rates.

While electricity prices are generally more stable than gasoline, surging EV adoption increases electrical demand. BESS systems store energy during off-peak hours, capitalizing on lower rates and offsetting costs during peak hours.
