As EV ownership increases, charging time remains a major concern for potential buyers. While most EV owners charge their vehicles at home overnight, public charging options are available at workplaces, grocery stores, and restaurants. However, the charging process can seem lengthy compared to the quick fill-ups gasoline vehicles offer, challenging the convenience expectations of many Americans.

The Varieties of EV Chargers

Level 1 chargers, designed for home use and overnight charging, can take a full day or more to fully charge an EV. These chargers are cost-effective, readily available from suppliers like Blink and Amazon, and simple enough to install in a home garage without professional help. They offer a charging rate of approximately 4 miles per hour.

On the other hand, Level 2 chargers offer a much quicker charging experience, capable of charging a car at a rate of about 25 miles per hour. These chargers are preferred by businesses, apartment complexes, parking facilities, and public garages due to their faster charging capabilities. Among these, Blink IQ 200 Level 2 chargers stand out for their advanced technology and the ability to charge some vehicles up to 60 miles of range per hour at 80 amps.

DC Fast Chargers, often referred to as Level 3 chargers (a term also used by some Tesla chargers), are less common due to their high cost. These chargers use DC power to charge an EV to over 80% in just half an hour but typically cost about twice as much to use as Level 2 chargers. Despite their expense, certain luxury hotels and restaurants offer DC Fast Charging as a premium service to guests. While DC Fast Chargers may seem ideal for those unwilling to wait for a charge, they come with their own set of pros and cons.

How They Work

Level 1 and Level 2 charging stations supply electric vehicles (EVs) with alternating current (AC), which the car then converts to direct current (DC) to charge its battery. This process allows for the gradual replenishment of the battery’s power. In contrast, DC Fast Chargers bypass this conversion by supplying DC power directly to the vehicle, enabling much quicker charging times. This method derives its efficiency from eliminating the need for internal conversion, significantly speeding up the charging process.

DC Fast Charging is distinct not only in its direct use of DC but also in its operational limitations. Typically, these chargers rapidly fill the battery to about 80% capacity, after which the charging speed decreases to prevent battery strain. Continuing to charge beyond this point becomes as slow as using a Level 2 charger, but with the higher cost associated with DC Fast Charging. Thus, completing a charge to 100% using a DC Fast Charger is both time-consuming and financially inefficient. Moreover, frequently charging any EV battery to full capacity can diminish its lifespan. Charging from 80% to full, particularly at a DC Fast Charger, is not only detrimental to the battery but also inconsiderate to other users waiting to charge, which is why time limits are typically enforced at these charging stations. These policies ensure efficient use while helping to preserve battery health over time.

Benefits of Using DC Fast Chargers for EVs

DC Fast Charging (DCFC) becomes crucial when you’re in urgent need of a substantial charge without the luxury of time. This is particularly true for situations like heading out of town or embarking on a road trip where waiting hours for a charge isn’t feasible. While some individuals may opt for DCFC regularly due to impatience with slower Level 2 charging speeds, Tesla owners often use the brand’s chargers, sometimes referred to as Level 3, for their speed and convenience. These chargers not only provide a quick energy boost but also convey a sense of luxury and a commitment to offering top-tier services to customers.

Reasons to Think Twice Before Using DC Fast Chargers

Not every vehicle is compatible with DC Fast Chargers, unlike Level 2 chargers, which all EVs can use. DCFC stations come with three types of plugs: CHAdeMO, CCS, and Tesla, adding a layer of complexity. Moreover, using DCFC typically costs about twice as much as standard electricity rates. The most significant downside, however, is the potential impact on battery longevity. Frequent use of DCFC can dramatically reduce a battery’s life expectancy, halving the typical 10-year lifespan with excessive use. While DC Fast Chargers offer the convenience of a rapid charge, akin to a quick meal stop, their regular use is advised against. For daily charging, Level 2 stations are preferable, extending battery life. Save DCFC for occasional needs like long trips or urgent situations.
